BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Nebraska Radio Personalities Hall Of Fame Board of Directors are voluntary, non-paid positions selected to serve as a liaison between the voting members of the Nebraska Radio media and the Nebraska Radio Personalities Hall of Fame.

The “founding” (initial) board will consist of three (3) individuals who volunteer and take part in the establishment and initial operation of the Nebraska Radio Personalities Hall of Fame.  Two of these directors will have two-year terms, expiring at the conclusion of voting, years ending in an odd number.  The third will have a one-year term, expiring at the conclusion of voting, years ending in an even number.

Following terms of the founding board, the term of service for all board members will be two years and limited to one term every six years.   Two seats will be vacated during odd years and one seat vacated during even years.  In the event a board member must resign before the end of his/her term, interim vacancies will be filled as needed, for the remainder of the current two year term.

Voting for new Board Members is conducted at the conclusion of the current year’s Hall Of Fame induction activities each year.

Additional members of the Nebraska Radio community are encouraged to participate in our  meetings, all of which are open to the public.

As a brand new organization, the above criteria are subject to change as determined necessary.

CURRENT BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Joe, Gary and Mike are three Nebraskans, past and present radio people, who believe there’s a need for recognition of our state’s radio personalities.  Over the past few months, they have discussed forming this “Nebraska Radio Personalities Hall of Fame” to honor fellow radio announcers.

We all have favorite disk jockeys, newscasters, sportscasters, or just plain announcers.  These names should be shared with everyone for what they have meant to us and to our communities in Nebraska.

Gary is a long-time "friend of radio".  Gary's involvement in radio started in junior high at a friend's home-built basement 100 milliwatt station.  They had two studios, thousands of records, real cart machines, and the house's circuit breaker panel (very convenient).  A personal tour of KOIL from Joe Light cemented Gary's future employment dreams, carried out in radio facilities around the Midwest.  Awhile back, Gary was admiring several Internet "radio station tribute pages" (including Joe Wicks' KOIL tribute page) and wondered if there was a tribute site for radio people.  He found a few, but none of them listed very many of his "hometown favorites" or the radio heroes he'd grown up with.  Plus, there were some personal favorites of his that he wanted to honor by sharing with everyone.  That got him thinking...what about a "Hall of Fame" to recognize our local announcers?  Gary contacted Dave, who runs the NEBRASKA RADIO PAGE  and Joe, operator of the NEBRASKA RADIO REGISTER  and suggested they start a Hall of Fame just for radio.  One thing led to another, and here it is!

Joe  is a native Husker, who spent his youth in Columbus.  He became a fan of radio sharing his listening hours with KOIL, KOMA and the after school "Teen Hour" on KTTT.   At age 12 Joe moved to Denver where big time Top 40 captivated him.  It was then he knew he wanted a career in radio.  He first broke into radio as a DJ in 1974 in Colorado.  Since 1991 he has been in sales at Kearneys' KKPR AM & FM, working from their Grand Island sales offices.  Joe created the NEBRASKA RADIO REGISTER in 1998.  "I found a wealth of information on Nebraska radio history on the internet, but little of it was organized.  I decided to tie it all together and the site has grown steadily since".  In addition to the Register, Joe has created tribute sites to KOIL, WOW and KIMN in Denver.

MIKE Grew up and started as a radio personality/announcer at the New Jersey Shore, listening to all the (once) great NYC stations that boom in there. Worked on the air at mostly country music stations in Colorado Springs and in the Pennsylvania markets of Allentown, Reading, and Philadelphia (WFIL) before moving to Omaha and WOW in 1982, where was part of the big format change to country. Segued over to KFAB & KGOR later that year and performed various on-air functions there until 1993.  Mike has served as an engineer and part-time on-air personality since then at KFAB/KGOR and most recently at KCRO since 1998.

Dave, the Webmaster was on the radio long before the famous pop band by the same name (Matthews).  While he has worked for pop (CHR) stations, his resume reflects his diverse tastes in music and love for radio (Oldies, News/Talk, A/C, a little bit of Country and a little bit Rock & Roll).  It all began at age 10, with a portable tape recorder.  In 1997 Dave launched a small tribute to the history of Lincoln radio stations.   After seeing the efforts of radio addicts in other states, he adopted the concept of a statewide resource, especially for broadcasters and retooled his site into  The Nebraska Radio Page .   When the opportunity arose to help launch a site dedicated to his friends and colleagues in the business, there was no hesitation.

While The Nebraska Radio Personalities Hall Of Fame stands a great chance of evolving into a spectacular part of radio in Nebraska, it is presently a grassroots campaign.  Very little money is being spent.  No $100-a-plate black tie dinner will be held.  No shiny awards being given out.  We simply want to honor Nebraska’s greatest radio personalities  past and present  in a permanent place.  This effort in no way is meant to discount the Nebraska Broadcasters Association awards  ours is merely different because it’s for radio personalities only, and any radio person can nominate and vote.  It’s of radio people, by radio people, and for radio people!
